Maureen Dunford has announced she will be stepping down as Chief Executive and leaving Cheshire FA at the end of December 2011.
“It has been a very difficult decision because I love my job but one of the deciding factors is that I have been accepted as a volunteer for the football section of the Olympic and Para Olympic Games. This is a great chance to become involved and I hope I can help build on the legacy the Olympics wants to leave behind to help football in some way.”
Maureen joined Cheshire FA in August 1998 and has seen a lot of changes. From being housed in a small cottage with a staff of four to now being in new Headquarters with a staff of eighteen has been an interesting journey.
In December 1999 Cheshire County Council ceased providing coaching courses and so the County FA took on the responsibility. This was the beginning of a new era and saw the appointment of John Ackerley as the County’s first Football Development Officer in 2000. It was also the year the County changed to an incorporated body and Maureen was appointed Company Secretary.
The building of the new Headquarters was a challenging and exciting time. It became the catalyst for setting up the Football Development Department. Delivering courses was a real benefit to Clubs as well as giving the County another income stream. The FA provided funding to employ more Football Development Officers and the County was seen by The FA as one of the most progressive.
Chairman Alan Burbidge and Maureen achieved another success by persuading The FA to part-fund a post for a Referee Development Officer – the first in the country. There is now a Referee Development Officer in every County.
In 2003 Maureen became Chief Executive.
“The passing of Alan Burbidge in 2004 was a very sad time” said Maureen “I’m so pleased he was able to see his dream become a reality when we moved into our new HQ. “
“The next few years will see more challenges but I know the County FA is in safe hands. I want to thank Chairman Dave Edmunds, the Board, Council and staff for all their support. I know we have a lot of talented and experienced people who will keep Cheshire FA at the forefront of grassroots football. I wish Simon Gerrard every success as the new Chief Executive. He will bring his enthusiasm and dedication to the role and I am sure his contribution will soon be recognised.”
“I’ve made so many friends during my years as County Secretary and then Chief Executive that it would be impossible to thank everyone individually. May I wish all Leagues, Clubs, Referees, Coaches and players every success for the future.”
