Cheshire FA's Get into Football programme, in partnership with Wirral Change, have developed the Wirral Community Monthly Football league.
Wirral Change is an organisation which supports the area’s black and racial minority groups.
Through the Football Foundation funding scheme Grow the Game, the organisation has been able to establish Wirral Change Football Club. They have established strong links in the local community and have developed five new adult male 11-a-side teams.
Also, they offer weeknight Just Play sessions at Birkenhead Youth Club for the service users, volunteers and staff. The funding also supports teams with affiliation fees, insurance and facility costs.
The league started in October and matches take place once a month, with all games at Bebington High School on their fantastic new full size 3G pitch.
It will run until May 2013 and has eight teams currently participating. Teams have been attracted to the league from the area's ethnic minority community and from informal social teams.
The aim of the league is to provide new teams with a flexible and accessible way into regular 11-a-side football. So far the league has been successful in attracting new players to the game, encouraged players back into football and created more local opportunities to play.
Dawn Georgeson, Football Development Officer at Cheshire FA, said: "The aim is to attract new players to the game, get players back into football and create more local opportunities to play.
"Also we want to support teams stay in the game and provide a link to local weekly football leagues."
