Cheshire will be represented on a National stage as Stockport Futsal Club prepare to enter National Division 2 in the upcoming 2013-2014 season.
The club were established in May 2012, initially just as a social session to introduce the game but due to popularity and demand a club was formed.
After playing a number of non-competitive matches momentum began to grow and now they will be looking to take on the nation on a weekly competitive basis.
Everyone involved is understandably thrilled at entering a national competition although there is wariness too, and club secretary Seb Rowe anticipates a huge challenge.
"We are both excited and apprehensive about entering the National League. We will be coming up against some very good teams with quite a bit of experience so it will be a steep learning curve for us but something we are looking forward to."
With a step up in division comes a step up in quality and even though the club can’t wait to begin the new season, there is an expectation that the skill levels will rise dramatically.
"We expect the standard to increase significantly in the National League. Although in the Manchester League we come up against some very good technical players, National League teams will be much better prepared, and will be tactically astute, so we expect adapting to that will be our greatest challenge," Rowe commented.
The season doesn’t begin until October but there is already a focus on making sure the whole squad is prepared for the upcoming campaign.
There are also a number of players who have a background in traditional football and as a result Rowe is determined to ensure everyone is up to speed when the season kicks off.
"As we get closer to the start of the season the frequency of training will increase as we look to develop both technically and tactically.
"We are still in the process of integrating new players to the club, but also many of our existing players are traditional football converts so both training and friendly matches will be key in terms of preparation for the National League."
The success of the club is obviously making the headlines however it is easy to overlook the hard work and dedication that has gone on behind the scenes and to Rowe, who has been at the club since day one, this hasn’t gone unnoticed.
"The players have shown great commitment to improving, and learning the game of Futsal. Off the field the committee have worked very hard to get the club into a position to be accepted into the National League. There is a still a lot of developing to do but the club is in a good position at the moment."
Stockport begin their campaign on Sunday 20th November away at Teeside Sport Futsal Club.
The Cheshire FA wishes Stockport Futsal Club every success for the coming season.
