The first Walking Football Cup, a tournament to be contested between teams from the Greater Manchester Walking Football League and the Cheshire Walking Football League, is to take place on Tuesday 12 September.

Sanctioned by Cheshire FA and hosted at our Moss Farm HQ this season, the link-up between the two leagues provides additional competition for local Walking Football teams and enhances the opportunities on offer.

This season’s tournament will see Cheshire Walking Football League’s 1874 Northwich and Altrincham Football Club take on Kingsmaid and Wakefield Wanderers of the Greater Manchester Walking Football League.

Matches will kick-off at 11.00am.

“To see the inter-league cup come to life has been exciting and adds another layer to competitive football for walking footballers across the county,” said Callum Yorke, Football Development Officer (Clubs, Leagues and Male Pathway) at Cheshire FA.

“It is hugely important that Walking Football is recognised as part of the player pathway, and part of a players’ journey through football in a fun, inclusive and safe environment. The Cheshire Walking Football League is an exciting place and this cup adds to the excitement.

“A special thank you goes to Fran Perez for making the inter-league cup happen. 12 September will be a great showcase of Walking Football.”

Cheshire FA has been working closely with a small group of volunteers to establish the Cheshire Walking Football League, which runs both an Over-50s and Over-60s division.

Following a successful pilot season in 2022/23, the league is looking to grow in 2023/24.

In addition, Cheshire Walking Football League has recently become a member of the Walking Football Leagues Alliance (WFLA). The WFLA is a ‘non-political, independent support network whose aims are to help establish, promote, and support FA affiliated walking football leagues nationally and to encourage the growth of grassroots competitive walking football in safe environments’. 

This membership will also allow Cheshire Walking Football League clubs to gain access to WFLA competitions and events, should they be eligible.
