On Saturday 30th June four of Cheshire FA’s match officials will fly out to officiate at the 2018 Iber Cup in Lisbon, Portugal.

Greg Nixon, Lee Budworth, Gareth Edwards and Jordan Brooks will be the four officials who will take part in a life changing experience which over the course of 8 days will give them an opportunity to learn, develop and enhance their refereeing skills.

Greg, Lee, Gareth and Jordan have had a successful season both on and off the field resulting in all four gaining promotion to the next level.

The four referees have been part of the Cheshire FA Referees Academy, which provides ambitious referees with in Cheshire the opportunity to attend regular meetings involving both practical and technical training sessions, as well as the opportunity to officiate at Crewe Alexandra Academy who play in the Premier League Academy.

The four referees will be joined by our Referee Development Officer Ed Duckworth and our Referee Support Officer and Academy Director Nigel Freelove.

Ed and Nigel (both FA Referee Coaches) will oversee the progress achieved at the tournament and provide the four referees with feedback and advice to aid their development as match officials.

Preparation

We have held two preparation meetings prior to the tournament which have involved fitness sessions, practical game based scenarios, laws of the game examinations as well as sessions on how to overcome language barriers and refereeing a potentially different style of football.

During the tournament we’ll be heavily focusing on developing their leadership and communication skills as well as their levels of mental resilience.

We’re looking forward to watching Greg, Lee, Gareth and Jordan progress throughout their time at the tournament both on and off the field.

Ed Duckworth
As a Referees Department we're driven to provide our match officials with high quality training and development opportunities and we have no doubts that this experience will do exactly that for Greg, Lee, Gareth and Jordan.
