The 2019 IBER Cup

On Saturday 29th June four of our match officials flew out to officiate at the 2019 IBER Cup in Lisbon, Portugal.

Matthew O’Shea, Tom Harrison, Tom O’Brien and Kyle Lines will be the four officials who will take part in a life changing experience which over the course of 8 days will give them an opportunity to learn, develop and enhance their refereeing skills.

The four referees have been part of the Cheshire FA Centre of Refereeing Excellence, which provides ambitious referees with in Cheshire the opportunity to attend regular meetings involving both practical and technical training sessions, as well as the opportunity to officiate at Crewe Alexandra Academy who play in the Premier League Academy.

The four referees will be joined by our Referee Development Officer Ed Duckworth and our Referee Support Officer and Academy Director Nigel Freelove.

Ed and Nigel will oversee the progress achieved at the tournament and provide the four referees with feedback and advice to aid their development as match officials.

Matthew, Tom, Tom and Kyle have attended two preparation meetings prior to the tournament which have involved fitness sessions, practical game based scenarios, laws of the game examinations as well as sessions on how to overcome language barriers and refereeing a potentially different style of football.

Ed Duckworth said “This is the second tournament that we have attended as a Referees Department and we are hoping to carry on from last year’s success. We have selected 4 referees who have so far shown the attitude and behaviour to succeed. I have no doubts that the tournament will be a great learning experience and one which will enhance their development as referees”.
